My wife gave me the Nike + iPod Sport Kit and new pair of Nike Triax 10, to replace my ready to retire Saucony Hurricane 8, for my birthday. I quickly broke in my new running shoes with a run on one of my running routes. I used the to opportunity to compare how well the Nike + tracked my run in comparison to my Forerunner 301. I'd always wondered just how well the Nike + sensor was at tracking your distance. Here are the results of my not so technical/scientifically controlled experiment.
Nike +
- Distance measured - 6.17 miles
- Time - 47:30
- Pace - 7:31
- Calories burned - 603
Forerunner 301
- Distance measured - 5.96
- Time - 46:30
- Pace - 7:48
- Calories burned - 613
The time difference was due to me pausing my workout on my iPod and stopping it. Once I figured that out, I stopped my workout. The only real discrepancy is the distance. I'm going to perform the calibration recommended in the Nike + instruction book and then see if the distance discrepancy decreases.
My main use of the Nike + iPod kit will be for trail running. My Forerunner doesn't get a good signal when it comes to running in the woods or in areas with tall buildings. This will allow me to still track my distance, time, and pace when my Forerunner can't. I'll still use my Forerunner on all my runs but will now have the Nike + iPod kit as a backup. This will come in handy for those times when I forget to charge up my Forerunner and it dies on me during a run.
